Liza Lo announces live reinterpretation EP Familiar: Live at Gearbox

A stripped-back return for Familiar

London-based producer and singer-songwriter Liza Lo has announced a new live EP, Familiar: Live at Gearbox, set for release in August via Gearbox Records. The project offers a fully analogue reinterpretation of selected tracks from her debut album Familiar.

The one-take sessions were tracked direct to ¼ inch tape using a vintage 1965 C37 tape machine and Decca Tree mic setup. These recordings capture the raw, intimate energy Liza Lo developed on the road with guitarist Sean Rogan and bassist Chris Rabbits. Directed by Kayla Middleton, the accompanying visuals reflect the atmospheric honesty of the performances.

Speaking about the project, Liza Lo said: “Having played these songs on the road over the past year has truly given them a whole new life. I remember opening for Steph during her UK tour and noticing how different our live set stripped back to two guitars was to the recorded album. Many people asked me if they could find a live or more intimate version of the songs, so it only made sense to make them! I learnt so much by playing live over the last year and it has given me a whole new outlook on how I’d like my music to sound going forward.”

Liza’s debut album “Familiar” touches on everything from the loss of friend, to moving away from her home in Europe, to the many subtle intricacies that come with modern day relationships.

A Messenger (Live at Gearbox) shared ahead of release

Alongside the announcement, Liza Lo has shared A Messenger (Live at Gearbox), a raw, emotionally-charged version of a track written about the heartbreak of losing a friend. The live setting adds delicacy to the string arrangements and guitar work, reinforcing the song’s vulnerability.

Speaking about the single, Liza Lo added, “A Messenger is a song I still need at times, I feel like many things are ever changing in life and many people walk in and out of certain chapters, the pain of losing a friendship never seems to ease however. I’m so thrilled to have recorded this more intimate version of the song, a new arrangement, direct to tape with little imperfections really make it feel like you’re in the room with us, which is my favourite way to enjoy music.”
